Smart O&M: the 8 hidden gems of Coswin 8i

This Tip & Tricks is dedicated to 8 advanced but little-known standard features that make Coswin 8i a real Smart Operation & Maintenance solution, well beyond traditional installation maintenance solutions.

Coswin has always been, by design, much more than a CMMS, much more than an “EAM”, mainly thanks to its extreme configurability: Coswin users are familiar with the diagram editor and the resource editor, which allow users to create completely new layout user interfaces and even functional modules without any software development.

Especially since the release of Coswin 8i in 2014 and subsequent updates (all customers under a support contract have free access to new updates), very advanced features of “Maintenance 4.0” have been included in the Coswin standard solution, covering topical technologies such as IoT, GIS, BIM, mobility and hot topics such as HSE, linear asset management, metrology and calibration.

Here are the 8 hidden gems of Coswin 8i:

1. Embedded GIS integration

Coswin 8i can display built-in ArcGIS (Geographic Information System) maps, available from the dashboard as well as equipment and work order screens. Coswin objects (assets, employees, jobs) can be geolocated, as can work areas. Actions can be performed directly on the map: visualization of the different layers, click on the object to display the KPIs and opening of the associated Coswin screens (technical details, preventive maintenance plans, creation of a work request, etc.) . The GIS function is also available on tablet.

2. Embedded BIM integration

Coswin 8i has a fully integrated BIM viewer based on the IFC standard. The viewer allows you to open the 3D model directly from the relevant Coswin screens, centered on the associated equipment object. Users can zoom and navigate, access all associated maintenance information, create work requests, and more. via a configurable menu. The interface also provides all the import tools needed to create equipment objects from the BIM model.

3. Tablet mode

Coswin 8i can be used directly on Android or Windows tablet, without the need for additional licenses. Known as Coswin’s “tablet mode”, it is automatically activated for users accessing Coswin from a tablet. All system functions are accessible to tablet users without any restrictions. The screens are automatically adjusted to match the patterns of use of the touch screen (larger buttons, simplified screen layout). Coswin Resource Editor can be used to customize specific screens for tablet users, for example operators performing production reports on tablets configured on their machines.

4. IoT integration

Coswin 8i is designed to integrate flexibly with cutting-edge Industry 4.0 or Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Coswin 8i provides a standard bidirectional integration toolbox, to receive useful data from connected objects (meters, measurements, alarms, health reports) but also to allow IoT users to open the relevant Coswin 8i screens from their surveillance screens. This integration approach was designed by maintenance experts to bring real added value to O&M users.

5. Metrology and calibration

Coswin 8i offers a metrology module dedicated to the calibration, measurements, history and traceability of instruments, fully integrated with other Coswin 8i modules. The metrology module guarantees equipment compliance, controls measurement methods and capabilities, tracks and manages deviations in accordance with the strictest industry standards. It is widely used in industries such as nuclear power and other complex and regulated applications.

6. Management of PPE – Personal Protective Equipment

Occupational risk management and safety are at the heart of business concerns. Coswin 8i, in addition to other safety related features such as work permit management, lockout and tagout (LOTO), safety instructions, hazard reports, etc., provides a dedicated PPE module to monitor the use of personal protective equipment by the technician, to manage their condition and their life cycle.

7. Linear asset management

Coswin 8i includes a complete set of functionalities to define and manage linear assets such as pipelines, rails, roads, waterways, power lines… The module, linked to on-board GIS functions for the geo-positioning of linear assets on maps, allows specialized teams to plan, report and analyze related maintenance activities.

8. User interface integration

Coswin 8i user interface integration module allows authorized third-party software to open specific Coswin 8i screens by calling up a URL with parameters such as equipment tag or work order number . This allows for example a SCADA operator to click on an object in his SCADA HMI to display detailed technical information (from Coswin) in a pop-up window or an integrated html page. User rights and security apply. This powerful yet easy-to-use feature opens up almost endless possibilities for integration.
